Danny Jaffer grew up and went to school in Polk County and worked summers in the orchards and fields from Buena Vista to Dallas, and canneries in West Salem. He graduated from Central High School in 1979 and attended Oregon State University. After college, Danny completed U.S. Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, and became a Designated Naval Aviator upon graduation from Navy Flight School. After flight training, Danny served as an officer and aviator in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years.While in college and during time away in the military, the Willamette Valley has remained Danny’s home. He spent time raising his family here and built a home on property that has been in the family for over 50 years. Danny and his wife, Renee, have three grown children: two daughters, (one son-in-law, active duty USAF), and one son (active duty USN).
Danny’s father was a chemistry and science professor at Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) for nearly 30 years. Danny’s mother was a special education teacher at the Oregon State School for the Deaf and a substitute teacher in local school districts. Danny’s parents have lived in Monmouth for 60 years, where they raised five children. Danny is the youngest.
Danny currently serves as President of the Luckiamute Domestic Water Cooperative and Chairman of the LDWC Board of Directors. He has served as an elected member of the Board of Directors (unpaid position) since March of 2011.
Danny retired from the Navy in 2010 after nearly 25 years of service, including five years spent in the Air Force Reserve. During his career, Danny served as a combat helicopter and fixed-wing pilot, as well as an operations and plans officer, and is a veteran of Desert Storm, Kosovo, the Global War on Terrorism, and several humanitarian assistance operations. Danny also flew rescue missions here in Oregon, as a member of the 304th Rescue Squadron (USAF Reserve), based in Portland. Following his retirement from the Navy, Danny served as an operations manager for L3 Vertex Aerospace from 2011 to 2012.
In addition to his military service, Danny earned a law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1997. Danny also served as legislative assistant to State Senator Cliff Trow and as an intern for the Oregon Senate Minority Leader’s Office.
In his free time, Danny has volunteered to serve as chairman of the annual Independence Airport Memorial Day Tribute Ceremony committee (2011-2015), graduated from the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Program, and is involved in Community Vitality. Danny is a member and President of the Central Lions Club, a recipient of the “Helen Keller Benefactor” Award for Service (2016-2017) from the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, and has raised money for the Monmouth-Independence YMCA. In addition, Danny has supported the American Cancer Society Relay for life, volunteered with the Ella Curran Food Bank in Independence, and has served as a Central Youth Sports and Military Youth Sports coach. Danny is also a life member of the Association of the United States Navy, a licensed fixed-wing and helicopter pilot, and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Danny has recently attended the Chemeketa Community College Wine Studies Program, where he was recognized as “Chemeketa Wine Studies 2017 Student of the Year.”
